Alleged Butler County murderer may have a reduced “life” sentence

Pennsylvanian Supreme Court

Nicholas A. White who is now 36, was 17 in 1998 when he was charged in the shooting death of his father in their Route 356 home. Robert Grant White was 43 when he was allegedly shot by Nicholas, his own son.

Initially, White was sentenced to life in prison. He has served 19 years of his life sentence so far. But the United States Supreme Court has brought up two ruling which may allow White to reach parole early. In 2012, the Supreme Court has ruled life sentences for teenage offenders is unconstitutional. At this time, White was not affected. In 2016, the Supreme Court wanted to make it for any past teenage offender sentenced to life to have it ruled unconstitutional.

White was just 1 of 517 offenders in Pennsylvania who now need to be resentenced. Judge William Shaffer is scheduling a resentencing hearing for the White homicide case. Since the beginning of August, over 100 inmates have been resentenced under the new rulings. A stunning 58 inmates have been released immediately, due to the time already served. 5 were denied parole, and 2 were resentenced to life without parole, usually capital crimes.
