Local PA state police identify phone-scam ring
January 27, 2018
Ah the scammers are back, and this time they are using a better way to try and scam the elderly, along with the unsuspecting. The local Pennsylvania State Police are warning residents that if you receive a phone call from your power company (Central Electric, West Penn, Penn Power, etc….) – be sure to call them back at the number listed on your bill or website.
According to officials, the scammers are “spoofing” their caller ID to show up as these power companies, and then demanding “MoneyPak” cards otherwise they will “shut down your electric”.
If you call back the official number, it will not dial into the scammers, but to the official call center. Electric companies will only send paper notices about your bill, and will not call you without you requesting a call. Also, be wary of men/woman showing up at your house claiming to be with the power or gas company.
